24 hours really isn’t enough time to truly see the capital and cultural centre of Germany, but if you’re time-crunched—here are some ways to maximise the true Berliner experience!
The city has a divided and storied past, mixing old and new and east and west in easily walkable neighbourhoods. If walking isn’t your favourite, public transit is open 24-hours a day and runs with the precision you’d expect from Germany. During the warmer months, the city is seen best by bicycle, with several rental options sprinkled across the metropolis.
Start your day with a coffee and a Berliner Pfannkuchen or just a “Berliner,” as most Germans say, a traditional pastry similar to a filled donut (but with no central hole) at a bustling café in any vibrant district. People watch while you caffeinate and perhaps enjoy the flourishing street art scene.
Monuments to moments in Berlin’s past are everywhere you look. Despite its popularity with tourists, the Brandenburg Gate remains a must-see on any trip to the city. It is popular with locals too and is often the site for public gatherings or used to make political statements.
For an artistic look at the capital’s Cold War past, head to the East Side Gallery, the largest open-air art gallery in the world. At more than 1km long, it is home to more than 100 artists’ murals painted on a remaining section of the Berlin Wall. If you’re looking for the true tourist experience, don’t miss a photo op at Checkpoint Charlie, a former Allied checkpoint between East and West Berlin made infamous by many spy thrillers and a real-life confrontation in the 1960s between American and Soviet tanks.
Whilst you could spend a week perusing the arts and antiquities in the middle of the Spree River, pick your favourite element of the robust Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site home to five museums, and catch the most storied artefacts in about an hour.
When you’re ready for a snack, don’t miss Berlin’s famous Currywurst, a pork sausage seasoned with curry powder and ketchup, often served with fries. This snack is so popular it even has its own kitschy museum. Wash it down with a microbrew from a trendy bar like Heidenpeters, part of the new-wave craft beer explosion mixing German techniques with American and Belgian ingredients to brew unexpected beverages.
If you’ve still got energy left—a trip to Berlin would not be complete without an attempted visit to one of its notorious nightclubs!
Try to get into Berghain, an infamous dance club inside a former East German power plant. Its particularly hard charm is the bouncer who minds the queue, but worth it if you make the cut! The club runs all week, at all times of day and night. Stand in line just for the experience—even if you never get in!
Check out the The Kit Kat Club, inspired by the Berliner nightclub featured in the musical Cabaret, which is just as lascivious as its fictional namesake. Mostly techno and trance music, the club is known for fetish enthusiasts of all persuasions pursuing all entertainment options. With a strictly enforced dress code, it is also open most days for all hours.
Stumble back to your luxury private jet in the wee hours of the morning after your day’s adventures to get some well-deserved rest. You’ve earned it, after all, surviving 24 hours in this cosmopolitan capital city!
